False Idol

I first imagined this piece nearly eight years ago, as a simple pencil sketch. Years later, life experiences brought me back to it, giving it a meaning I could finally express through sculpture.

She is an angel with tired wings. She has flown, struggled, and achieved, yet none of it seems to matter. All that is seen is her beauty, her body, her sexuality.

The drapery she holds is shaped to resemble female genitalia. But it is only fabric, a false representation covering her actual body. A symbol of how a woman’s identity, intelligence, struggles, and achievements can be reduced to her sexuality.

This judgment doesn’t come only from men. Sometimes, other women also diminish a woman’s success, attributing her accomplishments to her beauty rather than her abilities.

She is not trying to seduce anyone. She is exhausted from being seen, but never truly recognized.

She has wings, yet all they see is what’s between her legs.
